Masaka, Uganda. The Airtel Masaza Cup 2025 roared to life under the vibrant, expectant atmosphere of a packed Kitovu Arena as hosts Buddu locked horns with arch-rivals Gomba in the traditional curtain-raiser. While the absence of His Majesty the Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, currently in Germany receiving medical attention, cast a subdued note, the passion of Buganda football burned fiercely. Representing the Kingdom, the Katikiro, Charles Peter Mayiga, graced the occasion, witnessed by key partners Centenary Bank and Plascon represented by Benjamin Bicung Plascon Marketing coordinator .Buddu claim a hard-fought 1-0 victory sealed by a dramatic late Chrispus Sseruwuge goal.

With five titles clinched in 2004, 2009, 2014, 2017 and lately 2020, Gomba has lost in the final on multiple occasions. Gomba now eyes an unprecedented sixth title in as many seasons. Preparations to have a successful season in 2025 are already underway with the management team, technical docket and playing staff fully in place.

On Sunday, 8th June 2025, Gomba management officially unveiled the seasonal squad at home venue of Kabulasoke PTC playground. Oweek. Kitunzi Mugabi Fredrick William, the head chief of Gomba officially welcomed the management committee members, technical officials and the players to the “winning team”.

The event was well graced by the Rt.Rev Bishop Michael Lubowa (Central Buganda Diocese) blessing the ceremony. There was also friendly match with Ssingo Ssaza which witnessed Gomba sail to a 2-0 victory.

New signings Micheal Abura and Robert Ssewanyana scored the goals for the Lions.

Gomba is in Bulange group with 2022 winners Busiro, 2011 champions Buluuli, Busujju and islanders Ssese.

This year’s championship officially kicks off on Saturday 21stJune 2025 between the title holders Buddu and Gomba  at Kitovu Sports Arena.

The Buganda Masaza football tournament does not accommodate players who have elevated to the FUFA Big league status, those who have played for the senior national team (Uganda Cranes) and the U-23 side (Uganda Kobs).

The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has confirmed that Uganda Cranes goalkeeper Ismail Bin Watenga will undergo surgery for a knee injury sustained during the friendly match against The Gambia on Monday  game that ended one all. 
 
According to FUFA, Watenga has been diagnosed with a right knee ACL injury, which will require surgical intervention upon his return from camp.

Busiro FC officially launched their 2025 campaign with a royal ceremony at their Sentema headquarters, presided over by Sebwana Charles Kiberu Kisiriza. The 2022 Masaza Cup champions unveiled a star-studded technical team led by head coach Denis Kiyimba, featuring ex-Uganda Cranes player Hassan Wasswa Muwanda as first assistant.
