The Police in Kamuli is investigating a serious road traffic crash that occurred on the night of 17 July 2026 at about 9:30 p.m. at Busota Village near Busota Health Centre along the Kamuli–Jinja Road, leaving 31 students injured.
Busoga North police spokesperson, Samson Lubega said preliminary findings indicate that the crash involved motor vehicle registration number UAZ 463E, a school bus belonging to Buzaaya Secondary School, and motor vehicle registration number UAB 272W, a Tata lorry.Â
He said the identities of both drivers are yet to be established.
It is alleged that the Tata lorry was travelling from Kamuli towards Jinja when the driver attempted to overtake another vehicle. In the process, the lorry collided head-on with the oncoming school bus, which was transporting students of Nalongo Secondary School in Namwendwa.
A total of 31 students, comprising 20 female and 11 male students, sustained injuries of varying degrees.Â
All the victims were promptly evacuated to Kamuli General Hospital for medical treatment. No fatalities have been confirmed.
He  urged all motorists to exercise maximum caution while overtaking, particularly at night, and to ensure that overtaking is only undertaken when it is safe to do so.
He said reckless overtaking remains one of the leading causes of serious road traffic crashes.
He said urther updates will be provided as investigations progress.
Students, while recuperating in their hospital beds, attributed the accident to the driver's recklessness and undisciplined behavior, which they claimed had posed a threat of involving them in the incident.
Sharifa Naigaga, the Busoga North regional traffic officer, has confirmed that all students have been discharged and are no longer in danger.Â
She emphasized the importance of vigilance among road users and urged adherence to traffic signs, while also advocating for sobriety.
