Leaders in Mukono municipality and members of the National Unity Platform (NUP) in Mukono District are in shock after the sudden death of one of their councillors. The councillor representing Gwaffu Central, Gwaffu West, and Ntinda zone in the Mukono Municipal Council, who also held a party card to contest for the same seat in 10 villages, passed away last night.
The deceased, Charles Wakibugu, was a resident of Gwaffu in Goma Division, Mukono Municipality. He was serving his first term in office and had also been a royal servant in the Buganda Kingdom under Goma Sub-county, Mituba 9, in Sseta Parish, where he served as the parish spokesperson.
According to the Speaker of the Mukono Municipal Council, Dorah Nakaddu, Wakibugu had been battling sickle cell disease. He had been rushed to Mukono General Hospital two days ago, where he breathed his last earlier today.
Councillor Godfrey Mubiru, a councillor representing Ntinda Zone at Goma division, says that Wakibugu had struggled with this illness for a long time, though they were hopeful that since he had passed the age of 30, he would continue to manage it.
“He fell seriously ill on Sunday, and we rushed him to Mukono General Hospital, where he was receiving treatment. Today we were preparing to transfer him to Naggalama Hospital for further care, but at around 1:30 a.m., he passed away.”
Mubiru said they have lost a young man who was hardworking, sociable, and full of dreams.
Wakibugu also held an NUP card to run again for the same council position in the next term. His death brings to two the number of NUP cardholders who have recently died—among them Rachael Nakamanya, who had been representing the youth in Goma Division and had just received her NUP card to contest for the position of Female Councillor for Goma at the Mukono District Council. She died shortly after her nomination by the Electoral Commission.
At the moment, Wakibugu’s body has been taken to the mortuary at Mukono General Hospital as burial arrangements are underway.
