Luuka district bush war veteran demands president Museven pledges

A 72 year  old bush war veteran in Luuka district has asked president Museven to fulfil his pledges of building him a house and other income generating ventures to enjoy the fruits of the liberation struggle.

Jonathan Isanga Mugeere, a resident of Nakiswiga village in Nawampiti sub-county, who was part of the group that fought the rebels of late Alice Lakwena in the Busoga region, claims that the president promised to construct him a modern house, land, a motor vehicle, and other income-generating ventures when he captured power in 1986.

Mugeer,e who currently lives in a small muddy house with his family and suffers from diabetes, said that he has tried to chase promises from relevant authorities for a long time but in vain.

The old man who has documents about his claims said that his matter was referred to the presidential advisor in charge of veterans affairs, Rtd Lt.Gen. proscovia Nalweyiso, buthe has never got anything despite constant demands.

He asserts that the president made the promise to 12 people in Busoga, but whenever he tried to follow up about the matter, Nalweyiso was always busy on official duties without giving him much attention until he gave up, and some of the beneficiaries, including his father, Ismeal Ngobi, died demanding the same.

He adds that he also seeks help from various RDCs who are posted in the district, but all in vain and reminds the president to come to his rescue.

He expressed a challenge of living in a tiny house with a large family, as he failed to finish the 3-bedroom, her young daughter dropped out in senior one for lack of fees and failing to get treatment because of a lack of any income-generating venture.

Some of the documents seen by our reporter about the claim include a letter written bythe principal private secretary to the president, dated May 3 2010, addressed to Nalweyiso, seeking verification before recommending appropriate action and a number of forms for enrolment as Alice Lakwena victims' beneficiary.

Mugeere’s wife, Fidah Namunana, said that some of the community members mock them about their suffering, as his husband is part of the liberation struggle but can't benefit from the government.

She asked various relevant authorities to intervene in the matter as they are passing through a challenging situation in terms of accommodation and school fees for the children.

Dezilanta Namukaya, a daughter who dropped out in senior one, expressed frustration for missing studies at an early stage, citing the future being doomed.

She asked sympathisers to come to her rescue to raise school fees to resume her education.

Efforts to get a comment from Nalweyiso, Luuka RDC, and Micheal Kibwiika, among the  relevant authorities, about the matter were futile
