A tragic road crash last night claimed two lives and left eight others injured in Mazuba, Maganda Sub County, along the busy Iganga-Mbale Highway in Namutumba District. The fatal accident, which occurred on March 25, 2025, involved three vehicles, including a Tata Lorry (UBQ 901S), a Toyota Hiace (UBJ 358P), and an unidentified third vehicle.

A 59-year-old man, Patilisi Muduli, who had repeatedly attempted suicide in the past, was finally found dead in an apparent suicide by hanging in Kibuku District. The tragic incident occurred in the early hours , sending shock waves through the local community.

According to police reports, Muduli’s wife, Amuleni Jane, made the grim discovery at around2:26 am after waking up to find her husband missing. Muduli had earlier stepped out to check on his cows after supper but never returned.

A search led Amuleni to a mango tree near their home, where she found Muduli’s lifeless body suspended from a rope. In a desperate attempt to save him, she cut the rope, but it was too late—Muduli had already died.

Moses Mwanga Kitiyo the Bukedi North Regional Police Commander, confirmed that Muduli had a long-standing struggle with suicidal behavior, especially when angered or distressed.

“Our preliminary investigations indicate that the deceased had previously attempted suicide on multiple occasions whenever he was upset. This time, he unfortunately succeeded,” Mwanga stated.

Police have opened a case file, and the body has been taken to Mbale City Mortuary for a postmortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.

This incident adds to the growing list of suicide cases in Kibuku District. Just last July 2024 a 49-year-old man took his own life by consuming rat poison.

The district has also been grappling with other violent crimes, including mob justice killings and murders raising concerns over mental health awareness and crime prevention in the region.

Local leaders and health officials are urging the community to seek help for individuals showing signs of depression or suicidal thoughts.

“We need more counseling services and community support systems to prevent such tragedies,” said a district health officer who preferred anonymity.

As investigations continue, Muduli’s family and neighbors mourn a man whose struggles ended in the most tragic way possible. Authorities are appealing to anyone experiencing emotional distress to reach out for help before resorting to extreme measures.
