The NRM party secured most nominations for women’s councils and committees in Mukono District, positioning the ruling party to dominate the structures after elections.
The National Resistance Movement has secured an overwhelming majority of nominations for sub-county and municipal women’s councils and committees across Mukono District, official figures released on 14 August 2026 show, positioning the ruling party to dominate the structures once elections conclude tomorrow.
Mukono District Returning Officer George William Eliau said NRM candidates accounted for 89 of the positions filled during the nomination exercise. Independents secured seven slots, the National Unity Platform managed one, and the Democratic Party recorded none.
In the vast majority of the 18 sub-counties, town councils and divisions covered including Kyampisi, Koome Island, Nakisunga, Mpunge, Mpatta, Kasawo Sub-county, Ntunda, Kimenyedde, Kasawo Town Council, Namuganga, Nakifuma-Naggalama, Namataba and Central Division NRM nominees stood unopposed for all five key positions: chairperson, vice chairperson, secretary, publicity secretary and secretary for finance.
Opposition and independent challenges were limited and concentrated in a handful of areas. Independents filed nomination papers for the chairperson position in Nama, Katosi, Nagojje and Goma Division. An independent also contested the secretary for finance slot in Ntenjeru-Kisoga. In Goma Division, independents further challenged for the secretary and secretary for finance positions.
The sole NUP nomination came in Nama Sub-county, where the party fielded a candidate for vice chairperson.
The figures highlight NRM’s organisational strength at the grassroots in Mukono ahead of the women’s council elections. With most positions uncontested, the party is set to control the vast majority of local women’s leadership structures once the process ends.
Women’s councils form a key tier of Uganda’s decentralised governance system. They provide organised representation for women at parish, sub-county and district levels on issues of development, welfare and advocacy. The current nominations determine who will occupy these roles for the coming term.
Polling for the sub-county and municipal women’s councils is scheduled for tomorrow.
