Motorcycles, Bicycles Impounded in Crackdown on Illegal Fishing

Masaka, Uganda – The Fisheries Protection Unit (FPU) of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) is grappling with a growing stockpile of over 50 motorcycles, 70 bicycles, and a car confiscated from suspected illegal fish dealers in the Greater Masaka sub-region.

The seized vehicles, parked at the FPU base in Kasijjagirwa Armoured Brigade Barracks, were impounded during operations targeting the transportation of immature fish.
Outgoing FPU sector commander Lt. Hatim Mbazira revealed that more than 30 motorcycles were confiscated between December 2023 and June 2024, with many suspects abandoning their bikes upon interception.
Maj. Frank Kanzira, FPU operations commander, disclosed that some impounded motorcycles and bicycles have been at the base since 2018. He stated that the unit is consulting the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries on how to dispose of them legally.
