Mpigi, Uganda – The legal troubles of Mpigi District Chairperson Martin Ssejjemba and his associates deepened today as they appeared before Mpigi Magistrate’s Court to answer charges related to the alleged misappropriation of UGX 21 million meant for district projects.
Presiding Magistrate Joan Acca remanded the accused until 15th December 2023 to allow further investigations.
The prosecution, led by State Attorney Jackline Kyasimire, argued that Ssejjemba and his team failed to account for funds allocated for development projects in Mpigi.
Ssejjemba’s lawyers, including Abubaker Ssekanjakko, protested the remand, claiming the charges were politically motivated.
Fredrick Kirumira (Mpigi Service Commission Chairperson) and his lawyer, Simon Peter Ssekidd, clashed verbally, drawing laughter from the gallery.
Sharon Murungi, a local leader, condemned the alleged corruption: "These funds were meant to serve our people, not line pockets."
Ssekanjakko insisted: "Our client is innocent. This is a witch hunt to tarnish his reputation ahead of elections."
The case resumes on 15th December, with the prosecution vowing to present more evidence.
