Kampala, June 3, 2025 — In a swift and intelligence-led counter-terrorism operation, the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) this morning neutralized two armed terrorists in Munyonyo, a high-end suburb of Kampala, averting what security officials say could have been a devastating attack during Martyrs Day celebrations.
The operation, confirmed by Colonel Chris Magezi, Acting Director of Defence Public Information, took place in the early hours of Tuesday and was aimed at intercepting threats to national security. One of the two terrorists was identified as a female suicide bomber, reportedly laden with powerful explosives at the time of interception.
"It was an intelligence-led operation, and the security services are on heightened alert to ensure the Martyrs Day celebrations proceed without disruption," Col. Magezi said in an official statement on X (formerly Twitter).
The UPDF emphasized that the action was a preemptive measure, with no casualties reported among civilians or security personnel. Authorities believe the terrorists may have been targeting Martyrs Day pilgrims or events, which traditionally attract large crowds.
In the aftermath of the incident, Crime Intelligence, UPDF’s military intelligence chief Gen. Damulira, members of the UPDF Military Anti-Terrorism Unit, and operatives from other security agencies arrived at the scene to conduct investigations. The presence of high-ranking intelligence and military personnel highlights the gravity of the situation and the government's commitment to maintaining national security.
Images from the scene remain unverified, but sources indicate that UPDF special units acted promptly to prevent any detonation. The operation underscores the vigilance of Uganda’s defense and intelligence community in protecting public gatherings and sacred national events.
