Behind the doors of the Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) lies a silent shield protecting consumers from invisible threats in everyday products, from cancer-causing toxins in maize to deadly methanol in alcohol and banned antibiotics in chicken.

The 1st Project Management Committee (PMC) Meeting for the National Cancer Management and Capacity Building Project (CANCAP_UG), held on 26th February 2026 in Kampala, reaffirmed Uganda’s commitment to strengthening cervical cancer prevention and control through a strategic partnership between the Uganda Cancer Institute (UCI), the Ministry of Health (MoH), and the Korea Foundation for International Healthcare (KOFIH).

The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), in partnership with Mukono Municipality and with funding from the International Growth Centre (IGC) based at the London School of Economics, has launched a one-year pilot project aimed at transforming waste management practices in Mukono.

The Ministry of Health has raised concern over the high number of children born with cleft lip and cleft palate in Uganda, revealing that an estimated 1,000 babies are affected each year, many of whom face malnutrition, stigma, and even death if left untreated.

Speaking at the Ministry’s headquarters in Kampala, Dr Miriam Ajambo, a paediatrician and Principal Medical Officer, said the country continues to register significant numbers of congenital facial abnormalities, yet the number of specialised doctors available to handle such cases remains critically low.
