Rise in Amputations and Disabilities Reported in Uganda

Kampala, Uganda — A report released in 2024 has revealed an increase in the number of Ugandans suffering from amputations and permanent disabilities, according to health officials.

Dr. Charles Olara, who heads health services at the Ministry of Health, explained that many Ugandans are losing limbs due to accidents and other health complications.

An event was held at Mulago Hospital to hand over artificial limbs to  Ugandans who lost their limbs due to disabilities. The beneficiaries came from various districts including Kamuli.

Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia, together with his family, donated artificial limbs to those in need through their Ruparelia Foundation. The gesture came as they commemorated their late son, Rajiv Ruparelia, who died in an accident.

Joystan Ruparelia, speaking on behalf of Dr. Sudhir's family, read a statement noting that their son deeply loved helping the less fortunate. She said this is why the family chose to do what he would have done if he were still alive.

The beneficiaries who received the artificial limbs expressed joy as they tested them by walking.

Dr. Rosemary Byanyima, the Executive Director of Mulago Hospital, praised the strong partnership between the Ruparelia Foundation and Mulago Hospital. She added that the support provided has helped Mulago Hospital extend services to Ugandan citizens.
