Mbale, Uganda – In a significant step toward improving access to justice, Deputy Chief Justice Flavian Zeija officially launched the Court of Appeal in Mbale on Monday. The new court, which will operate within the Mbale High Court building, is set to serve the Eastern region, reducing the need for residents to travel long distances to Kampala for appeal services.  

Residents of Emityana in Zigoti Town Council have taken the law into their own hands, burning to death a young man suspected of stealing goats. The incident occurred after the suspect was caught and accused of being part of a gang involved in rampant livestock theft in the area. The suspect, who was reportedly riding a Bajaj motorcycle with registration number UEP 237G, was attacked by an angry mob, and his motorcycle was also set ablaze.

The Uganda Police Force and Uganda Prisons Service have announced plans to recruit new officers to bolster their ranks and enhance service delivery to the public. Frank Baine, the spokesperson for the Uganda Prisons Service, revealed that the recruitment process will target individuals who have completed Senior Four (S.4) and possess the required academic qualifications. He emphasized that applicants must be physically fit, free from chronic illnesses, and willing to undergo rigorous training lasting several months.

The judiciary has announced plans to establish new courts in various constituencies across Uganda and increase the number of judges to address the growing backlog of cases. Hon. Justice Dr. Flavian Zeija, the Principal Judge of the High Court and Deputy Chief Justice of Uganda, emphasized that these measures are aimed at improving access to justice and ensuring timely resolution of cases.
