Market Vendors Drown in Floods After Pleas for Help Ignored

Flooding at Nyendo Market in Mukungwe Division claims lives after vendors’ pleas for help were ignored.

A tragic incident has unfolded at Nyendo Market in Mukungwe Division, where persistent flooding has finally claimed lives after vendors' repeated cries for assistance went unheeded by city authorities.

Despite significant investments from President Museveni's government to construct the market, vendors have long struggled with deplorable conditions - flooded walkways, collapsing stalls, and dwindling customer numbers due to the inaccessible environment. The situation reached a breaking point this week when floodwaters swept through the market during heavy rains.

Market chairman Ssendaggo John expressed vendors' growing despair: "We work in mud, compete with illegal outside traders, and now watch our livelihoods wash away." Vendors had previously petitioned division leaders through SALT Media, highlighting how the flooded infrastructure was destroying their merchandise and businesses.

Jeremiah Kaloli, a longtime vendor, revealed the economic toll: "The drainage system has been clogged for years. Outside traders take our customers while we drown in debts from unsold goods."

In an emergency meeting at the market, Mukungwe Division Mayor Mulindwa Naku and deputy leader Mutebi Ibra finally addressed the crisis. Authorities ordered the immediate removal of illegal vendors obstructing proper drainage, while promising swift action to repair the market's infrastructure.

"Those operating outside the market must vacate immediately," declared Mutebi Ibra. "The law doesn't permit this disorder, and we will ensure all vendors can operate properly within the market."
