NUP Leader Robert Kyagulanyi Blocked from Final Campaign Rally in Mukono Municipality

MUKONO – National Unity Platform (NUP) president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu was prevented from reaching his final campaign rally in Mukono Municipality on Saturday morning, sparking frustration among supporters who had gathered since early morning.

The rally, scheduled to take place at Ntawo Ward in Mukono Central Division, was intended to be Kyagulanyi’s last stop in a series of engagements across Nakifuma, Mukono North, and Mukono South constituencies. Supporters—including youth, elders, and local NUP leaders—had gathered in anticipation of his arrival as part of his 2026 presidential campaign mobilisation.

Despite setting out early in the morning, Kyagulanyi’s convoy was reportedly blocked near Nakiyanja, delaying his arrival and ultimately preventing him from accessing the venue. Heavy security presence and road obstructions were cited as reasons for the disruption.

Among those present at the waiting venue were senior NUP officials such as Party Spokesperson Joel Ssenyonyi, Paul Kakande, Mityana MP Francis Zaake, and aspiring parliamentary candidates, including Blasio Zabaali Mukasa. Also present was Robert Peter Kabanda, the NUP flag bearer for Mukono Municipality.

Muhammad Muwanga, the party’s deputy leader for the Buganda region, urged supporters to reject sectarian politics and focus on the NUP manifesto.

Mukono NUP secretary Richard Lugolobi and municipal youth leader Margaret Natabi called on supporters to remain steadfast and avoid being swayed by last-minute inducements from opponents.

Mukono’s Goma Division Chairperson Humphrey Kyassa accused security agencies of deliberately deploying obstructive tactics—including placing logs, burning tyres, and mounting roadblocks—to prevent the NUP leader’s access.

The incident has heightened political tensions in the municipality just ahead of the election period, with many supporters expressing disappointment and vowing to remain committed to the party’s cause.
