Kira Municipality Launches Road Projects, Mayor Calls for Central Government Support

The Mayor of Kira Municipality, Julius Mutebi Nsubuga, has requested the central government to stop sidelining local government leaders in its projects to ensure their smooth implementation.

He made these remarks in Kira during the signing of contracts for three roads set to be constructed.

Kira Municipality is one of the fastest-growing municipalities in the country. According to last year's census, this division has a population of over five hundred thousand people.

As part of the effort to improve the living standards and economy in this area, local leaders are spearheading the construction of three roads, aimed at eliminating the dust problem that has plagued this area for a long time.

These roads include: Bweyogerere-Buto-Namugongo road, 6.5 kilometres long; Kikonko-Namanve road, 1.3 kilometres long; and Kireka-Kamulu-Bethany road, 3.5 kilometres long.

The ceremony was attended by leaders at various levels, including Edemachu Monica Ejua, the Under Secretary of the Ministry of Kampala and Metropolitan Affairs, the Woman Member of Parliament for Wakiso District, Betty Ethel Naluyima, Kira Mayor Julius Mutebi Nsubuga, and others.

We spoke to local council chairpersons and residents where these projects will pass, and they expressed their relief after the signing of the contracts and shared how they feel now.

"I have asked the Chinese Civil Engineering Construction Corporation and Kiru Engineering Services Limited to build the roads properly so that the residents of Kira can enjoy their area.

Edemachu Monica Ejua, the Under Secretary of the Ministry of Kampala and Metropolitan Affairs, urged the leaders of Kira to lead development and avoid politics, especially on matters of developing the area.

"She is concerned about people who build haphazardly along the roadsides and then blame their leaders.

"I thank the residents of Kira for offering their land, something that has helped the plan to build the roads to go ahead.

"He has requested the government to stop sidelining local government leaders in its projects for them to proceed smoothly.

Benon Yiga, the Municipal Engineer for Kira, highlighted the importance of these roads for both Kira Municipality and the country at large.

The Woman Member of Parliament for Wakiso District, Betty Ethel Naluyima, thanked the local governments in Wakiso for working together, especially on development issues, and for following up on what they pledged in parliament.

"She has asked the government to increase its supervision, especially in developing the areas of Wakiso, because that is the solution to the problems choking Kampala.
