Rwenzururu Kingdom Warns Politicians Against Misusing Omusinga’s Name in Campaigns

The Rwenzururu Kingdom has issued a strong warning to political actors against using the name of His Majesty Omusinga Charles Mumbere Iremangoma in their campaigns. The caution comes after allegations that former Leader of the Opposition Winnie Kiiza Nyabahasa invoked the Omusinga’s name while campaigning for the National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate in the Kawempe North by-election.

In a press release dated today, November 11, signed by the Acting Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. Benson Kule Baritazale, the kingdom distanced itself from statements allegedly made by Winnie Kiiza during her campaign. A video circulating on social media shows Kiiza claiming that she was sent by the Omusinga to rally support for the NUP candidate.

During a press briefing at the Obusinga Bwa Rwenzururu Liaison Office in Kasese Town, Rt. Hon. Noah Nzaghale, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, reiterated the kingdom’s position. He emphasized that the Omusinga remains neutral and does not endorse any political party or candidate.

The Rwenzururu Kingdom urged all stakeholders to respect the cultural institution’s neutrality and allow it to continue promoting peace, unity, and socio-economic development in the Rwenzori region and beyond.

The warning comes amid heightened political activity in the lead-up to the Kawempe North by-election. The Rwenzururu Kingdom’s statement underscores the importance of maintaining the cultural institution’s integrity and neutrality in political matters.
