Electoral Commission Warns Against Violence Ahead of Kawempe North By-Election

The Electoral Commission (EC), led by Justice Simon Byabakama, has issued a stern warning to all stakeholders in the Kawempe North by-election to ensure a peaceful and transparent electoral process. The by-election, scheduled for tomorrow, will determine the new Member of Parliament and Local Council Chairperson for the area.

The warning was delivered during a stakeholders’ meeting held at Makerere University’s School of Public Service, attended by candidates, security officials, media representatives, election observers, and other key players. Justice Byabakama emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and urged candidates to deploy responsible agents to monitor the voting process.

The EC Chairperson also called on security agencies to remain vigilant and ensure law and order throughout the election period. He warned that anyone found inciting violence or engaging in malpractice would face the full force of the law.

Gerald Twishimire, the Deputy Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, assured the public that security forces are working closely with other agencies to ensure a smooth and peaceful election. He urged residents to cooperate with law enforcement and report any suspicious activities.

Some candidates expressed concerns about the potential for violence and irregularities during the election. Hannifah Karadi, one of the candidates, shared her fears about the process, citing past incidents of intimidation and malpractice.

The EC has deployed election materials and personnel to all polling stations in Kawempe North, with voting set to begin at 7:00 a.m. tomorrow. Voters are encouraged to turn out in large numbers and exercise their democratic right.
