President Museveni Declines Request for New Aber District, Prioritizes Road Infrastructure

The NRM District Chairperson, Bosco Onyiki, formally presented the request to the President, emphasizing the administrative challenges posed by the district's vast size.

Oyam District, Uganda – President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has been urged to approve the creation of a new Aber District, to be carved out of the present Oyam District, following persistent appeals from residents who argue that the current district is too large to administer effectively.

The appeal was made during a presidential campaign rally held at Booma Grounds in Oyam Town Council. The NRM District Chairperson, Bosco Onyiki, formally presented the request to the President, emphasising the administrative challenges posed by the district's vast size.

“This district is as large as Wakiso; it is the second largest in the country. It has over 1,000 villages and a population of more than 500,000 people, making it extremely difficult to provide effective services to everyone.”

However, when it was his turn to address the issue, President Museveni declined the request for the new district. He explained that the government's current priority for the Lango sub-region is the construction and improvement of roads, not the creation of new administrative units.

The President then posed a question to the crowd, asking them to choose between better roads and a new district. The audience unanimously chose the new district, but the President insisted that road development must come first.

“I have asked them what they want, and they have said a district. I will give it to them. But I have told them that our current focus is on tarmacking the roads in Lango.”

President Museveni also used the occasion to call upon the people of Oyam to actively participate in the NRM government's ongoing struggle to eradicate poverty.

“Everyone must be a player in the fight against poverty. This is a war the NRM started, and we must all join in.”

After his rally in Oyam, the President proceeded to Pakwach District to continue his campaign trail, where he is expected to address similar developmental issues.
