Members of the NRM Greater Mukono Pressure Group have expressed fear that the recent acts of violence and intimidation witnessed during the Kawempe by-elections could lead to chaos and instability in the upcoming national elections.
The group voiced their concerns during a meeting held in Mukono Municipality with Afande Ddamulira, the head of pressure groups in the country. They called on security agencies to curb such acts of violence, which they said could discourage voters and lead to unfair elections.
Sadati Katabira, the leader of the group, stated that there is no justification for beating people or targeting journalists, as was seen during the by-elections. He emphasized that such actions tarnish the image of the electoral process.
Sarah Daisy Ssonko, the Woman Member of Parliament for Mukono Municipality, who also attended the meeting, urged NRM supporters to use wisdom and strategy to win elections rather than resorting to violence. She warned those who undermine her leadership that she has proven her capability and will continue to serve effectively in Parliament.
Afande Ddamulira, who was also present, reminded security personnel to remain professional and avoid being used to intimidate citizens. He emphasized that their role is to protect the public and ensure peace, not to engage in acts of violence. He also noted that while the NRM lost in Kawempe, it was an election loss, not a defeat of the party itself.
The group called for calm and urged all stakeholders to work towards peaceful and fair elections in the future. They emphasized the importance of maintaining stability and avoiding actions that could lead to voter apathy or unrest.
