Kawempe North and Kazo Angola By-Elections

Voting is currently underway in the Kawempe North parliamentary by-election and the Kazo Angola local council chairperson by-election, following a tense campaign period marked by allegations of voter intimidation and violence. Voters in these constituencies have turned out in large numbers to cast their ballots, determined to elect their preferred candidates.

Hannifah Karadi, one of the candidates in the Kawempe North by-election, expressed confidence in her victory after casting her vote at St. Paul Church of Uganda in Kyebando. She urged voters to remain calm and avoid any acts of violence.
At the Mbogo Mosque polling station, voters were seen lining up early to cast their ballots. Independent candidate Mutazindwa Muhammad expressed concern over the low voter turnout and called on residents to participate actively in the election.
"It is disappointing to see low voter turnout. I urge everyone to come out and vote for the candidate of their choice," said Mutazindwa.
Godfrey Kiwanda Ssubi, the NRM Vice Chairperson for Buganda Region, claimed that the NRM had already secured victory in the by-elections. He praised the party’s candidates for their strong campaigns and urged voters to support them.
However, Dr. Tanga Odoi, the NRM Electoral Commission Chairperson, dismissed Mutazindwa’s concerns, stating that the party had followed all electoral guidelines and was confident of a fair outcome.
The voting process has been largely peaceful, although there were reports of a Double Cabine vehicle parked near a polling station, causing tension among voters. Security personnel were quick to address the situation and ensure order.
As the by-elections progress, voters remain hopeful that the process will be free, fair, and transparent, leading to the election of leaders who will address their needs and concerns.
