Following the chaos and irregularities reported during the Kawempe North by-election held last Thursday, NRM flag bearer Hajat Faridah Nambi has spoken out, vowing to challenge the election results in court. Nambi is contesting the victory of NUP's Elias Nalukoola Luyimbazi, who was declared the winner by the Electoral Commission.
Nambi, who was found at the offices of the Kyadondo Electoral Committee, expressed confidence that the court will rule in her favor. She claimed that the recount conducted at the Mbogo tally center revealed discrepancies, asserting that she had actually won the election by a significant margin.
Dr. Tanga Odoi, the Chairperson of the NRM Electoral Commission, stated that this move is in line with the party's decision to implement the directives of the party's top leadership. He condemned the actions of a group of youth who allegedly caused chaos during the election, describing their behavior as unacceptable. Odoi revealed that the party has assembled a team of 15 lawyers to handle the case in court.
William Katumba, Nambi's campaign manager, also emphasized that the election was not conducted fairly for their candidate. Some of Nambi's election agents further alleged that they were intimidated and harassed in various polling stations.
Enock Barata, the NRM's legal head, stated that the case will be resolved swiftly, adding that they have already gathered testimonies from over 400 witnesses.
The Electoral Commission declared NUP's Elias Nalukoola Luyimbazi the winner with 17,764 votes, while Faridah Nambi came in second with 8,593 votes. Nambi and her team are now preparing to present their evidence in court to challenge the outcome.
