MITYANA, Uganda – Police in Mityana District are holding three suspects in connection with an aggravated robbery spree that targeted several homes in Kakindu Sub-county, with military uniforms and equipment recovered from the alleged perpetrators.
According to a statement issued by the Wamala Region Police Spokesperson, SSP L. Kigozi, the arrest followed a swift response by the community in Kiwoya Bweza Village after residents raised an alarm during a robbery on the night of August 1st, 2026.
Nzabashaija Wilberforce, a 26-year-old resident of Kiriri in Makindye Division, Kampala, had arrived at his mother's village in Kiwoya Bweza, Kakindu Sub-county, during daytime on August 1st, carrying luggage whose contents were unknown to the community.
That night, Wilberforce opened his luggage and dressed up in military uniforms. Armed with a knife, pliers, and a screwdriver, he embarked on a robbery spree alongside his brother, Kusasira Fredrick.
The duo first broke into the home of Ms Namatta and stole a bicycle. They proceeded to break into the homes of Ms Ntegeyo and Nakiwala Teopista, threatening to harm them while demanding money.
The public acted swiftly upon hearing the victims' alarm and managed to arrest Nzabashaija Wilberforce on the spot. Recovered from him were a pair of military attire, a knife, a plier, and a screwdriver.
The matter was reported to Kakindu Police Station by Mr Kirudde Sabiiti, the Chairperson of Kiwoya Bweza Village. The suspect and exhibits were handed over to police, who later arrested his accomplice brother, Kusasira Fredrick, and their mother for attempting to obstruct police officers in the course of their duties.
During a joint interview by Mityana Police investigators and the Regional Flying Squad Unit, Nzabashaija Wilberforce confessed to breaking into the house of a serving UPDF soldier in Kiriri, Makindye Division, in mid-July 2026. He robbed military stores including two pairs of uniforms, a 3-inch mattress, a sweater, and a bag.
Police say the suspect intended to use the military attire for dubious activities such as robbery and illegal roadblocks. When his first mission in Kiriri Makindye failed after attacking an elderly woman who had no money, Wilberforce decided to relocate to his mother's village to continue his criminal activities.
SSP L. Kigozi commended the vigilance and swift response of the people of Kiwoya Bweza Village for acting promptly and, importantly, for not resorting to mob justice.
"God has been good he was arrested by the community in the village when he had not yet harmed anybody," the statement read.
Efforts are underway to recover all remaining military exhibits in the suspect's possession for safe custody. Police have confirmed that inquiries into the case continue, and the file will soon be forwarded to the Resident State Attorney of Mityana for sanctioning of probable charges against the three suspects.
