CHAN 2025: CAF Officials Inspect Uganda's Preparedness

Kampala

The year 2025 holds significant importance for East Africa, as Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania prepare to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Ahead of this major event, the region is also gearing up to host the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN), which is scheduled for February 2025. However, the tournament's timeline has been adjusted due to delays in preparations.

Today, a delegation of Confederation of African Football (CAF) officials arrived in Uganda to assess the country's readiness for the tournament. The delegation was received by officials from State House, the National Council of Sports (NCS), and the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA), led by Eng. Moses Magogo. The inspection team was also accompanied by Lt. Col. Seku Kidemuka, who is overseeing the preparations.

The CAF officials conducted a thorough inspection of the Mandela National Stadium, Namboole, to evaluate whether the required upgrades and facilities have been implemented. Among the areas inspected were:
- Anti-doping facilities
- Four dressing rooms, which have been upgraded as per CAF requirements, including the addition of an Ice Bath as mandated by CAF.
- The external training pitch, which was also inspected, with its dressing rooms found to be in good condition.
- The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system, which has been installed but is yet to be fully operational. It will, however, be ready for use during CHAN.

After inspecting Namboole, the delegation proceeded to assess other training facilities, including Kyambogo Stadium, where work is ongoing under the supervision of the UPDF Engineering Brigade. Lt. Col. Seku Kidemuka provided updates on the progress, stating that the drainage system has been completed, and water channels have been installed. He added that the remaining work involves laying over 300 concrete slabs and compacting the soil.

The government has already released the necessary funds for the upgrades, and the grass is expected to be planted by March 2024. Additionally, a water pump system has been installed, and plans are underway to construct a Pavilion for spectators.

The CAF officials also inspected two other stadiums, Kadiba and Wankulukuku, which will be used as training grounds for the tournament.

Uganda's preparations for CHAN 2025 are a critical step toward ensuring the country is ready to co-host AFCON 2027. The government and stakeholders remain committed to delivering world-class facilities for the tournaments.
