Uganda Mourns Tennis Legend Cedric Babu, Government Urged to Support Family

The Ugandan sports fraternity gathered at Lugogo Indoor Stadium to pay final respects to renowned tennis player and administrator Cedric Babu, whose sudden passing at age 50 has left the nation in shock. The former Davis Cup star, who represented Uganda in the 2000s, was remembered for his pivotal role in developing lawn tennis before his death on August 31, 2025.

During the emotional sendoff, Babu's father, Captain Francis Babu, made a heartfelt plea to the government to support his three orphaned grandsons, all aspiring tennis players. Sports Minister Peter Ogwang, representing the First Lady, pledged to immortalise Babu's legacy by naming a section of the upcoming Lugogo Indoor Arena in his honour.

The ceremony drew Uganda's sporting elite, including BBC journalist Allan Kasujja, Uganda Olympic Committee president William Blick, and former athlete Mark Ssali. Babu's body was transported to Rubaga Cathedral for a requiem mass before burial at his ancestral home in Kamengo.
