Uganda And Somalia Pledge To Strengthen Defence Cooperation

The governments of Uganda and Somalia have signed a joint communiqué to strengthen defence cooperation between the two countries. The agreement was signed during a meeting at Uganda's Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs (MODVA) headquarters in Kampala, attended by Uganda's Defence Minister, Hon. Jacob Oboth Oboth, and Somalia's Defence Minister, H.E. Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur, who was on a two-day working visit to Uganda.

Hon. Oboth highlighted the strong bilateral ties, emphasizing Uganda's long-standing involvement in Somalia through the Uganda Peoples' Defence Forces (UPDF) and its commitment to Pan-Africanism. He expressed optimism for Somalia's future stability. Minister Nur praised the UPDF's sacrifices in Somalia and acknowledged the enduring friendship between the two nations.

The ministers discussed security issues in Somalia and the region, stressing the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the Horn of Africa and across the continent. They also welcomed the launch of the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), which follows the achievements of the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS).

The meeting was attended by senior officials from both countries, including ambassadors and military officers, reflecting the importance of the discussions and the commitment to deepening defence cooperation.
