Speaker of Parliament Raises Concerns Over Dr. Kiiza Besigye’s Detention

The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among has raised critical questions regarding the ongoing detention of retired Colonel Dr. Kiiza Besigye, who is reportedly being held in poor conditions. During a parliamentary session, Among emphasized the need for transparency and justice in handling Besigye’s case.

Speaker Among stressed that Members of Parliament were elected to speak for all Ugandans, including those who cannot speak for themselves. She highlighted the importance of standing up for individuals facing difficulties, noting that today it is Besigye, but tomorrow it could be anyone else.

Among revealed that the issue of Besigye’s detention had been brought to Parliament’s attention earlier in January. She called for urgent action, urging the Minister of Internal Affairs and the Attorney General to address the concerns raised by MPs regarding Besigye’s welfare and legal rights.

The Minister responsible for constitutional affairs confirmed receiving reports about Besigye’s deteriorating health, stating that he has been refusing food and surviving only on water. There were also reports that Besigye had been taken to a hospital for medical attention, raising further concerns about his well-being.

The Speaker referenced a directive from President Yoweri Museveni, who called for Besigye to be tried expeditiously in civilian courts. This followed the suspension of military court trials for civilians, a move aimed at ensuring fairness and justice. Museveni emphasized the need for transparency and due process in handling Besigye’s case, urging the judiciary to expedite the process.

Speaker Among reiterated the importance of upholding justice and fairness in the country. She urged leaders to ensure that the rule of law is respected and that all individuals, regardless of their status, are treated with dignity and equity.

As the debate continues, Parliament remains committed to ensuring that Dr. Kiiza Besigye’s rights are protected and that his case is handled in accordance with the law. The Speaker’s intervention underscores the need for accountability and transparency in addressing such sensitive matters.
