The Democratic Party (DP) has officially endorsed Henry Kasacca Mubiru as its flag bearer for the upcoming Kawempe North by-election. DP President Nobert Mao emphasized the importance of electing a leader with integrity and urged residents to choose a candidate who represents their interests, rather than being swayed by political opportunists.
The announcement was made during a press conference held at the DP headquarters in Kampala, attended by party leaders and supporters who gathered to show their solidarity with Mubiru.
DP President and Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Norbert Mao, described Mubiru as a dedicated and capable member of the party who has consistently demonstrated his commitment to DP’s values. He expressed confidence in Mubiru’s ability to lead and address the pressing issues facing the people of Kawempe North.
In his address, Mubiru outlined his priorities, which include tackling unemployment, combating human rights violations, and addressing other critical challenges in the constituency. He also revealed his intention to seek permission from the Kabaka of Buganda to temporarily step back from his cultural duties as he focuses on his political campaign.
John Mutenyu, the chairperson of DP’s electoral commission, reaffirmed the party’s commitment to supporting Mubiru’s candidacy. He stressed that DP is prepared to bring both strength and wisdom to the competitive race, ensuring a fair and transparent electoral process.
Mubiru’s entry into the race adds momentum to what is expected to be a fiercely contested by-election. Voters in Kawempe North are preparing to elect a new Member of Parliament, and candidates from various political parties have already thrown their hats into the ring.
Among the notable contenders are FDC’s Khalifa Aganaga, NRM’s Faridah Nambi, lawyer Erias Luyimbaazi Nalukoola, Twahiira Ssegirinya (widow of the late MP Muhammad Ssegirinya), Hajjat Hanifah Karadi, Alex Luwemba, Dr. Ismael Matovu, and others.
The DP electoral commission announced that the nomination of candidates will take place on the 26th and 27th of this month, with the by-election scheduled for March 13.
As the campaign season heats up, all eyes will be on Kawempe North, with DP hoping to secure victory through Henry Kasacca Mubiru’s leadership and vision for the constituency.
