The 36th edition of Uganda’s National Heroes Day celebrations is currently underway at the Kaliro Town Council playground in Lyantonde District, drawing thousands of Ugandans from all walks of life in a colorful commemoration of the nation’s gallant sons and daughters.
The Chief Guest, H.E. President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, arrived at the venue earlier this morning accompanied by the First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Maama Janet Kataaha Museveni. The couple was received by top government officials, security personnel, and cultural leaders amid cheers and chants from enthusiastic crowds.
This year’s celebrations are being held under the theme: “Recognizing the Sacrifice of our Heroes in Pursuit of Uganda’s Socio-Economic Transformation.” The theme emphasizes the critical role that past and present heroes have played—and continue to play—in shaping Uganda’s journey toward peace, stability, and development.
President Museveni first visited a monument and praised the contributions of Uganda’s freedom fighters, veterans, and other patriots who have sacrificed for the country’s prosperity. He reminded Ugandans, especially the youth, to emulate the courage, discipline, and resilience of national heroes.
“We are here today because of the bravery and commitment of men and women who stood firm in the face of adversity. Let us honor them not just in words but by dedicating ourselves to hard work, unity, and patriotism,” President Museveni said.
The ceremony featured a military parade, cultural performances from various regions of Uganda, and the formal recognition of individuals who have been instrumental in the country’s development. Several heroes and heroines, both living and posthumous, were awarded medals for their distinguished service in categories such as the Luwero Triangle Medal, the Nalubaale Medal, and the Damu Medal.
Also present were ministers, Members of Parliament, religious leaders, diplomats, and representatives from civil society. Security remained tight, with deployments ensuring a peaceful and orderly event.
As the celebrations continue into the afternoon, residents of Lyantonde expressed pride and gratitude for hosting such a monumental national event. Local leaders noted that the occasion is a significant boost to the district’s visibility and economy, with hotels, vendors, and transport services seeing a surge in activity.
National Heroes Day, observed every June 9, commemorates the memory and contribution of individuals who fought for Uganda’s liberation and progress. The day serves as both a solemn reminder of the country’s turbulent past and a call to action for present and future generations.
As festivities continue, Ugandans are urged to reflect on their individual roles in advancing the ideals of unity, service, and nation-building—values that the country's heroes dearly held.
