Older Persons' Village Committee Elections Ongoing In Lira City

The Electoral Commission has commenced the election of Village Committees for Older Persons across the country, with the process actively taking place in several parts of Lira City. The elections, aimed at empowering the elderly and ensuring their representation at the grassroots level, have seen mixed participation in various wards. Low Turnout in Some Areas as Exercise Kicks Off Across Uganda

In many villages across Lira City, including areas like Ojwina and Adyel divisions, the elections went on smoothly with elderly residents turning up to either contest or vote for their preferred leaders. Positions being filled include Chairperson, Vice Chairperson, Secretary, Deputy Secretary, and Treasurer, all meant to advocate for the welfare of older persons in their respective communities.

However, the situation was different in some places like Junior Quarters Ward, where no older persons expressed interest in contesting for any position. Local leaders attributed the low enthusiasm to limited awareness about the significance of the committees and possibly the health challenges facing many elderly persons, which might have hindered their participation.

According to Electoral Commission spokesperson Julius Muchunguzi, the elections are part of a broader effort to strengthen inclusivity in governance. He encouraged communities to mobilize and support the elderly to take part in leadership, emphasizing that the voices of older persons are crucial in influencing social and development programs tailored to their needs.

The exercise will continue across the country in phases, culminating in the election of older persons' representatives at parish, sub-county, district, and national levels.
