NRM Primary Campaigns in Kasese Conclude Peacefully

Despite isolated incidents of tension, the campaigns remained largely peaceful

The National Resistance Movement (NRM) primary campaigns in Kasese District have concluded, with aspirants for various positions demonstrating determination and resilience throughout the process.

Despite isolated incidents of tension, the campaigns remained largely peaceful, underscoring the party’s commitment to democratic principles.

During the rallies, candidates encouraged locals to leverage the region’s geographical advantage by boosting trade with the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). They emphasised that with strengthened livestock and poultry farming, as well as increased production, residents could directly benefit from cross-border trade opportunities.

Ms. Diana Nasuna, who is contesting against four male candidates in Kasese Municipality, stressed the need to transition from subsistence farming to commercial agriculture to meet the growing demand in the DRC market.

Meanwhile, Ms. Sarah Kabegyesa Malembe pledged to collaborate closely with farmers to enhance the quality of their produce, facilitate access to formal export channels, and ensure they no longer miss out on the global market.

Hon. Godfrey Kabyanga, the incumbent State Minister for ICT and National Guidance, faces strong competition from two rivals: Milton Wangalima, a popular events MC, and veteran politician Dr. Chrispus Kiyonga, who also serves as the Chancellor of Makerere University.

Addressing voters, Hon. Kabyanga promised to work tirelessly to improve access to clean water and better road infrastructure in the region.

Before the 1996 elections, campaigns were often less issue-driven, focusing more on loyalty to the Movement rather than policy. Today, the process has evolved, becoming more structured, competitive, and centred on economic empowerment and regional integration.
