NRM Primaries Heat Up in Mityana as Candidates Withdraw in Favor of Stronger Contenders

Mityana, Uganda – The race for NRM party flagbearer positions in Mityana District has taken a dramatic turn as several aspirants voluntarily withdraw from the primaries, strategically consolidating support behind candidates deemed more competitive against opposition parties in the 2026 general elections.

Hajjati Sumayiya Nakayiza, a prominent NRM cardholder vying for the Mityana District Woman MP seat, has stepped aside to support former Lands Minister Judith Nabakooba. The surprise move came during a high-stakes meeting at a Mityana hotel attended by top NRM officials, including:
George William Nnyombi Thembo and Hon. Joyce Nabbosa Ssebugwawo.
Nnyombi Thembo emphasized the need for cohesion: "Internal divisions weaken our electoral prospects. We must present a united front as we approach 2026." His remarks come amid concerns about factionalism within NRM ranks.
The ICT Minister urged delegates to prioritize electing competent leaders: "We need representatives with proven integrity, not those fearing to face constituents over unfinished projects." The comment appeared directed at some MPs reportedly avoiding their constituencies.
The withdrawing aspirant explained her decision: "After careful consultation, I recognized the need to consolidate our support behind a strong candidate. My withdrawal stems from patriotism, not weakness."
The former Lands Minister, now frontrunner, welcomed the development: "I'm ready to vigorously defend the NRM flag and deliver victory for our party." She pledged to address Mityana's pressing land issues if elected.
