NRM Members in Mukono Demand Party Reforms After Violent Primary Elections

NRM party members in Mukono District accuse leadership of failing to address postelection violence and alleged malpractice.

MUKONO – Tensions within the NRM party in Mukono District have escalated as members accuse party leadership of failing to address post-election violence and alleged malpractice during recent primaries. The grievances were voiced during a press conference at Mukono District headquarters.

Failure to Assist Injured Members: Party members expressed frustration over the lack of support for colleagues who sustained injuries during the chaotic NRM primaries, including former Mukono District Chairman and parliamentary aspirant Andrew Senyonga Luzinda, who was allegedly assaulted by security personnel in September.
Concerns Over Registrar’s Conduct: Members questioned the impartiality of Joseph Sulume, the NRM registrar for Goma Division, accusing him of manipulating the electoral process.
Threats to Party Unity: Members warned that continued bias in candidate selection could cost the NRM victory in the 2026 elections.

Joseph Wamala, NRM spokesperson for Mukono Municipality, criticised the party’s silence on the attacks:
"When our members were beaten, leaders looked away. This injustice must be addressed to restore faith in the party."

Dickson Mazinga, another member, added, "If our leaders don’t reform the party’s operations, we risk losing supporters to independents."

Senyonga and youth leader Lauben Ssenyonjo, who were both injured, are receiving treatment in Nairobi, Kenya.
Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango confirmed that the case file has been forwarded to regional investigators.

Members of the opposition have petitioned the Republic of the Democratic Congo (RDC) and President Museveni to undertake the following actions:
Investigate registrars suspected of electoral manipulation.
Provide medical assistance to injured members.
Implement transparent and equitable candidate selection processes.
