NRM Electoral Commission Chaired by Dr. Tanga Odoi Speeds Up District Chairperson and Mayoral Elections, Following Last Week’s Events on July 24, 2025.
Dr. Tanga Odoi has settled into the main offices of the NRM Electoral Commission, located at Plot 13, Kyadondo Road, alongside other officials working with the committee. He stated that these elections proceeded smoothly compared to the earlier parliamentary elections, which had been marred by numerous disputes.
The committee has also announced elections for sub-county (Gombolola) chairpersons, town councils, municipal mayors, and their councillors.
These candidates will first undergo verification starting tomorrow, with document submission running from July 28th to August 4th, 2025, followed by nominations from **August 5th to August 9th.
They will be allowed to campaign for only three (3) days, meaning voting will take place on August 15th, as clarified by Dr. Tanga.
The committee also confirmed that individuals representing various special interest groups—including persons with disabilities, the elderly, the youth, and others—will be elected at the level of sub-county, town council, and municipal councillors between August 15th and 17th, 2025.
Meanwhile, district, town council, and municipal councillors will be elected on August 16th, 2025, according to Tanga Odoi.
All candidates are required to submit their applications at their respective NRM district offices from July 28th to August 4th, between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM.
However, Dr. Tanga Odoi and his committee have noted that they will handle complaints similarly to how the party’s president and NRM National Chairperson, H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, addressed grievances from the parliamentary elections. Some media reports have falsely claimed that some candidates were disqualified. When interviewing these individuals, the committee may seek further clarification and has urged the media to avoid misleading questions.
In this regard, Dr. Tanga also emphasised that the NRM Parliamentary Caucus (Ttabamirika) will convene in August. He dismissed petitions from those who believe they were cheated in the elections, stating that those who will sit in the caucus are the rightful winners, not those who merely raised flags.
Regarding the election of NRM leaders at various levels under the structure system in districts that have not yet completed the process—such as Sembabule, Luwero, Lira City, Arua City, Amolatar, Mbale City, and Ntungamo—they will repeat the elections, according to Dr. Tanga.
Tomorrow, the Tribunal Committee appointed by the president to investigate complaints from the NRM parliamentary elections will begin its sessions. It will hear five cases daily out of the 380 petitions filed, focusing on electoral malpractice.
