Members of Patriotic League of Uganda Demonstrate at German Embassy in Kampala
Tension gripped parts of Kampala on Thursday morning as members of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), a political pressure group aligned with First Son Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, staged a demonstration at the German Embassy in Kololo.
The protestors, who were dressed in yellow and black PLU attire, carried placards and chanted slogans condemning what they termed as "foreign interference in Uganda's internal affairs."
Led by some of their youth leaders, the group accused Germany of allegedly funding and supporting elements they claim are working to destabilize Uganda's sovereignty and undermine national development efforts.
The demonstrators demanded that the German government respects Uganda's independence and stops what they called “biased diplomatic practices.”
Police and military personnel were quickly deployed to the area to contain the situation. Although there were no reports of violence, the demonstration caused heavy traffic along Acacia Avenue and surrounding roads.
By midday, the protestors had dispersed peacefully after delivering a petition to embassy officials, who promised to forward it to their government.
Authorities are yet to comment on whether any legal action will be taken against the organizers of the demonstration.
