Government Allocates Two Billion Shillings to Combat Child Labor

Government has allocated 2 billion shillings this financial year towards fighting child labor to the ministry of genda. The funds are part of the government commitment after reports indicating that the number has continued to increase.

This was disclosed by the state  minister for gender Esther Anyakunyi while  officiating a the world day against child labour  in Kampala.The report indicated over 6.8 million children who are under go child labor in Uganda .The report highlighted areas such as mining in stone quarry and  sugar cane plantation among others.

The minister says the ministry is now going to partner with local council and police to ensure that child labor is cambarted.More cases were recorded after covid pandemic where over one million children never returned to school.

Anyakunyi also sounded warning to politicians who are intending use children during campaigns which denied them the opportunity to access school.

 Speaking at the same function Hellen Auma who represented the Uganda  employers association expressed commitment to partner with the ministry to ensure that incidents of child labor is eliminated.

She also noted that Uganda’s cases have double after the outbreak of covid from 4 million children to 6.1 million .According to the new global statistics which was recorded in Geniva child labor stands at 138 million worldwide.

Meanwhile the permanent secretary ministry of genda Agrey Kibenge  noted that child labour is  still  a big challenge in Uganda. He has mentioned of the government role in fighting child labor by ratifying international labor conventions  such as conventions  on the labor age  admission to employment among other  frame works.
