I Don’t Trust the NRM System: Woman MP Connie Nakayenze Galiwango

MBALE CITY – In a dramatic and emotional address to a gathering of  journalists, Hon. Connie Nakayenze Galiwango, the fiery Woman Member of Parliament for Mbale City, declared that she will not seek re-election under the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) ticket, citing deep mistrust in the party’s primary election system.

With a mix of defiance and sorrow, Nakayenze revealed how she was robbed of her victory in the 2021 NRM primaries, only for her opponent—backed by powerful government connections—to be handed the flag instead.

"Even after winning the elections in Mbale, my victory was stolen. My results were only declared in Kampala, not here where the people voted for me. But thank God, I stood as an independent and won—even when they took me to court, the truth prevailed," she said, her voice trembling with lingering frustration.

The MP’s speech took a poignant turn as she addressed the painful personal attacks she has endured since the tragic death of her husband, Mr. Hassan Wasswa Galiwango, in 2023.

"They say I am finished because my husband is gone. That he was my pillar. Yes, his death was a big blow—he was my rock, my advisor. But God is still alive!" she declared, her eyes glistening with tears. "If God used my husband to support me, He will raise another. I am still standing, and I will prove that God fights for the vulnerable."

Her political adversaries, she claimed, have weaponized her grief, spreading lies that she is too broken to return to Parliament.

"They used my pain, my court battles, my mourning, to tell voters I would never come back. But here I am—stronger, wiser, and ready to fight for my people again."

Nakayenze also opened up about the heavy toll of her 2021 election legal battles, which drained her financially and distracted her from serving her constituents effectively.

"That court case made my life very hard. It cost me so much—time, money, peace. And while I was fighting, my opponents used that period to undermine me, to tell people I had abandoned them. But now, I am back to set the record straight."

In a rousing conclusion, the embattled legislator called upon her supporters to rally behind her independent bid, framing the 2026 election as a battle against betrayal and injustice.

"To all who stood with me, come back. Let us work together to shame those who thought my husband’s death was the end of me. Let us show them that the people of Mbale City cannot be fooled. Vote me back, and we shall prove that truth and faith always win!"

As the room erupted in applause, it was clear that Nakayenze’s story—of stolen victories, personal loss, and unyielding faith—had struck a chord. The stage is now set for a high-stakes political showdown in Mbale, where loyalty, betrayal, and resilience will collide in what promises to be one of the most dramatic election battles of 2026.

Will the people of Mbale City stand with the widow who refuses to fall? The answer lies in the ballot box come 12th  ,January 2026.
