Speaker of Parliament, Annet Anita Among, has tasked Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Nobert Mao, to explain the circumstances surrounding the detention of former FDC presidential candidate Dr. Kizza Besigye in Luzira Prison. The move comes amid growing public concern over what many perceive as a violation of Besigye’s rights.
Mao was also asked to address allegations that Besigye’s detention was politically motivated, following a military court order last month that barred civilians from appearing before military tribunals.
Additionally, Among directed State Minister for Internal Affairs, General David Muhoozi, to provide clarity on the legal basis for Besigye’s continued detention.
In his response, Minister Mao confirmed that Besigye had refused meals while in detention but had resumed eating today. He emphasized that Besigye’s legal team had submitted documents containing irregularities, which complicated the processing of his case. However, Bugiri Municipality MP Asuman Basalirwa challenged Mao’s claims, questioning their accuracy.
General Muhoozi, on his part, informed Parliament that Besigye would remain in custody until the government completes its investigations and transfers his case to civilian courts.
As tensions rose during the session, Speaker Among temporarily suspended the sitting. She was joined by Third Deputy Prime Minister Hajat Lukia Isanga Nakadama, Government Chief Whip Denis Hamson Obua, and FDC MP Yusufu Nsibambi, among others, in urging calm and a thorough examination of the matter.
Following the discussions, Speaker Among directed the ministers to conduct a comprehensive review of Besigye’s case and report back to Parliament.
In his final remarks, Minister Mao assured MPs that Besigye would be brought before a civilian court tomorrow and that the government would take the necessary steps to resolve the matter.
The Speaker and MPs expressed relief at the progress made, hoping for a swift and just resolution to the case.
