DP Leadership Crisis Erupts Ahead of Elections
Tensions flared within Uganda's Democratic Party as Bukoto Central MP Richard Ssebamala publicly challenged DP President Norbert Mao's leadership legitimacy. The confrontation follows Mao's recent press conference, where he dismissed Ssebamala's bid for the party's secretary generalship position, citing a lack of necessary qualifications.

Ssebamala fired back during a Masaka press briefing, accusing Mao of sidelining grassroots delegates and effectively serving President Museveni's interests. He referenced Gen. Salim Saleh's alleged interference as evidence of Mao's compromised position. DP legal advisor Richard Lumu and deputy secretary Deogratious Kiyingi joined the fray, with Kiyingi suggesting the party might as well merge with NRM given its current trajectory. Â
The public spat exposes deepening fractures within Uganda's oldest opposition party as it prepares for crucial internal elections. Party elder Denis Majwala appealed for unity, urging members to focus on transparent electoral processes rather than public infighting. Â
