Renowned Democratic Party (DP) activist Benedicto Kiwanuka Galiko has expressed frustration over the prolonged delays in court judgments regarding his legal challenges against DP President Norbert Mao’s leadership. Kiwanuka, a long-standing member of the party, has filed multiple cases questioning the legitimacy of Mao’s election and the processes that led to his leadership.
Kiwanuka’s legal battles stem from the 2000 DP General Assembly, where Norbert Mao was elected as party president and Gerald Serwanga as secretary-general. He alleges that the election was marred by irregularities, including the conduct of the returning officer, Kennedy Mutenyo, who he claims denied him the opportunity to contest for the secretary-general position despite paying the required fee of two million shillings.
One of Kiwanuka’s earliest cases was filed before Justice Micheal Elubu, but it remains unresolved. He also cited another instance where the case was transferred to Justice Phillip Odoki, only to be adjourned again due to the judge’s involvement in parliamentary election petitions.
Kiwanuka further highlighted irregularities in the handling of his cases, including altered hearing dates and unexplained adjournments. His most recent case challenged the legality of the DP Delegates Conference held in Soroti City on August 14 last year. The judgment was initially scheduled for February 19 but was postponed again, as the court prioritized the case involving Dr. Kizza Besigye
