Chaos in NRM Village Elections in Lubaga Division.

Lubaga Division– Tensions flared during the NRM village leadership elections held yesterday in Lubaga Division, with many areas experiencing disruptions. Supporters of opposing candidates clashed, leading to a chaotic situation.

In Najjanankumbi, Ronald Nsimbi, who was contesting under the name Abdallah Kitata, was declared the loser. His supporters, however, rejected the results, accusing the electoral officials of mishandling voting documents and manipulating the process to alter the outcome.

The situation escalated when supporters of Asadu Sendiwala, another candidate, called for the election to be nullified and rerun, citing irregularities and lack of transparency in the vote-counting process.

Amid the confusion, Kato, the NRM electoral head for Lubaga District, ordered a halt to the election for the Najjanankumbi village chairperson. However, Ronald Nsimbi and his supporters refused to accept the suspension, insisting that they had already won.

The standoff prevented the election from proceeding, and Sendiwala’s camp intensified their protests. Eventually, Nsimbi’s remaining supporters conducted a separate vote, declaring him the winner, while official results showed Asadu Sendiwala leading with 32 votes against Nsimbi’s 4.

According to NRM party officials, today’s election was postponed after higher authorities intervened, directing the NRM Electoral Commission to review the process. The commission was instructed to assess whether yesterday’s election should be upheld or annulled.

Dr. Tanga Odoi, the NRM Electoral Commission chief, later called for an emergency meeting to decide the next steps. He emphasised the need for proper documentation before any further action is taken regarding Nsimbi’s petition.

Voters remained gathered at the polling station, demanding that electoral officials resume the process. They vowed not to leave until a clear resolution was reached.

Sendiwala, who was initially declared the winner after a recount, dismissed the allegations of fraud but expressed confidence in his supporters’ strength.

Sendiwala’s camp accused NRM electoral officials of bias, claiming that they were deliberately confusing to undermine his victory. They argued that the officials were disregarding the will of Lubaga’s residents.
