Buikwe District has finalized preparations to host President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni as he launches his campaign activities ahead of the 2026 general elections, the Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Rtd Maj David Matovu, has confirmed.
Supporters of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) across the Greater Mukono sub-region are already in high spirits as they prepare to receive their party chairman and presidential flag bearer, who is scheduled to spend two days touring the area as part of his nationwide campaign program.
According to the official program, President Museveni will kick off his regional tour on February 2, 2026, starting with visits to Kayunga and Mukono districts, where he will address a massive rally at Naggalama grounds. On February 3, the President will proceed to the Buvuma Islands before concluding his visit in Buikwe District. His final stop will be in Lugazi Municipality, where he is expected to meet residents and NRM supporters.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Salt Media, RDC David Matovu said all security, mobilisation, and logistical arrangements are firmly in place to ensure a successful visit. He revealed that the President’s main address in Buikwe will be held at the Mehta grounds near Scooul in Lugazi town.
“We are fully prepared to host His Excellency the President. All stakeholders are working together to ensure the visit is peaceful, well-organised, and successful,” Matovu said. He called upon residents of Buikwe and neighbouring districts to turn up in large numbers to welcome the President and listen to his message.
Matovu emphasised that the people of Buikwe have, unlike in previous election cycles, made a firm decision to rally behind President Museveni and the NRM, following strong mobilisation efforts within the Buganda region. He noted that areas which cooperate with government programs often benefit more from development initiatives than those that choose to remain confrontational.
He cited several key development milestones achieved under the NRM government in Buikwe District. These include the Kiyindi–Kirongo ferry service, which has greatly improved transport and trade links between Buikwe and the Buvuma Islands, and the Kiyindi clean water project valued at 25 billion shillings, which has improved access to safe water for thousands of residents.
Matovu also highlighted major road infrastructure developments such as the Katosi–Nkokonjeru–Nyenga road, upgrades at Kawolo Hospital and other lower-level health facilities, the implementation of the Uganda Support to Municipal Infrastructure Development (USMID) program, and the ongoing construction and modernisation of Lugazi Central Market. While acknowledging that some projects still face implementation challenges, he assured residents that the government is steadily addressing them.
On industrialisation and job creation, Matovu said Buikwe District is emerging as a key industrial hub in the region. He revealed that Njeru Municipality alone hosts at least 72 factories, with additional industries spread across other parts of the district. These factories have provided employment opportunities to thousands of young people and boosted local revenue collection.
He further noted that through government wealth-creation initiatives such as the Parish Development Model (PDM) and Emyooga, Buikwe District has so far received more than 23 billion shillings aimed at improving household incomes and promoting grassroots economic transformation.
Other notable government investments in the district include the construction of the district headquarters, expansion of educational infrastructure through new schools and classroom blocks, and improvements in other public facilities. Matovu praised NRM supporters for maintaining discipline and peace despite what he described as provocation from political opponents.
Buikwe District has an estimated population of over 500,000 people and comprises 67 parishes, which make up Buikwe South Constituency, Njeru Municipality, and Lugazi Municipality. Its strategic location and growing industrial base make it a key political and economic district within the Greater Mukono region.
As anticipation builds ahead of the President’s visit, residents of Buikwe say they are ready to offer President Museveni a warm reception and to showcase the district’s development progress, unity, and commitment to continued transformation under the NRM government.
