President Museveni Fulfills Pledge to Boost Mechanics' SACCO Development Funds

President Yoweri Museveni has honoured his promise to provide additional development funds for Mechanics' Savings and Credit Cooperative Organisations (SACCOs). The President made this commitment on Sunday during a meeting with mechanics at the Kololo Ceremonial Grounds, where he emphasised the government's dedication to uplifting mechanics from poverty.

Today, the responsibility of overseeing government programs in the President's Office fell to Yiga Kisa Kyamukama, who confirmed that the 200 million shillings pledged by Gen. Museveni will be increased and distributed to each mechanic's SACCO in Kampala and surrounding areas. The funds are expected to be deposited into the respective SACCO accounts within the next four months. Additionally, the President has urged the mechanics to secure land for establishing permanent workshops.

Kisa Kyamukama made these remarks after meeting chairpersons of mechanics' associations from the five divisions that make up Kampala. The meeting, held in Bwaise, also included the President's representatives. He clarified that the funds are not for personal use by individual mechanics, nor are they a campaign tool, as some had begun to speculate.

In light of the current political climate, Kyamukama appealed to politicians to allow mechanics to conduct their work freely. He urged the mechanics' leaders to ensure transparent and collective management of the funds, protecting them from potential misuse by unscrupulous members.

Mechanics' association chairpersons, including Harrison Zimbe of Lubaga Division and Lawrence Kizza of Makindye, praised President Museveni for his steadfast focus on development issues.

Mark Baingana, the Presidential Representative in Rubaga Division, urged the mechanics to invest energy in development and to remain vigilant and actively involved in monitoring the implementation of projects.

Yiga Kisa Kyamukama later proceeded to Nansana in Wakiso District, where he also met with mechanics. Some attendees questioned their support for President Museveni, while others expressed gratitude for the services delivered to them. It was noted that a significant number of Nansana residents were born during President Museveni's tenure, associating his long rule with stability.

The Wakiso Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Justine Mbabazi, advised the mechanics that voting for Museveni is a vote for Uganda's peace and stability.

Kisa Kyamukama further announced that President Museveni has also set aside 300 million shillings for SACCOs belonging to women working in garages, such as food vendors, with an additional 100 million shillings earmarked for them.

He revealed that the process to register these SACCOs formally would be completed within just four days after members contribute their shares, enabling them to start accessing funds to lift themselves out of poverty.

During the meeting, Kyamukama donated two million shillings to a young woman who had expressed her unemployment status, initiating a welfare fund. The mechanics, in turn, presented President Museveni with a gift of a second-hand car model, which they requested be delivered to Kyamukama.

In his engagements with Wakiso mechanics, Kyamukama discovered they were being overcharged for trading licenses. He immediately directed that no garage should pay for a license until the RDC convenes a meeting with the mechanics to establish a fair and affordable fee.
