A Quick Trial: A Response to Concerns on Dr. Besigye's Remand by President Museveni

I've noticed concerns regarding Dr. Besigye's remand for alleged serious offenses. For a stable country, the question should be: "Why was Dr. Is Besigye arrested?" The answer lies in a quick trial to reveal the facts. Otherwise, we risk promoting insecurity, which is detrimental to our nation.

We Ugandans have long practiced reconciliation and forgiveness, dating back to the 1960s. However, our doctrine also emphasizes accountability for those who harm Ugandans. We remember heroes like Janani Luwum, Benedicto Kiwanuka, and Edward Mutesa, who fought for our freedom and peaceful existence.

In Dr. Besigye's case, a quick trial is essential. The trial process was delayed due to the Courts' identification of gaps in the Military Courts, leading to the transfer of cases to Civilian Courts. We're working to address these gaps and ensure a fair trial.

If Dr. Besigye is innocent, why not demand a quick trial to prove his innocence and expose any persecution? Instead of seeking bail or forgiveness, he should seek a swift trial. On the issue of his health, there's a government hospital in the prison, and his personal doctors have been visiting him.

Dr. Besigye's hunger strike has contributed to his weakness, as seen in recent photos. This approach can be seen as unprincipled blackmail. Why respond to serious allegations with a hunger strike, seeking sympathy for bail? A quick trial is the answer.

The military court was ready for the trial, but we await the civilian court's proceedings. Let's prioritize justice and stability for our nation.
