A tragic accident in Queen Elizabeth National Park claimed the lives of two people and left three others injured after a Bwera General Hospital ambulance overturned at Nyamuhuru corner along the Rubirizi - Kasese Road.
Preliminary police investigations attribute the crash to overspeeding which caused the driver to lose control on the sharp turn.
According to SSP. Tumusiime Marcial, the police spokesperson for greater Bushenyi region, the accident occurred at around 9:20pm when the driver of the Toyota land cruiser ambulance registration number UG 3100256 lost control while navigating a sharp corner bend.
The ambulance, which was returning to Kasese from Mbarara Hospital veered off the road and overturned.
The deceased have been identified as Glades, a 56-year-old, resident of Kigoro village in Kasese Municipality of Kasese district, and Samuel Barugahara a 79-year-old from the same area. Both victims succumbed to their injuries after being rushed to Rugazi Health Center IV.
Three others sustained injuries including Ithungu Joy 52yrs, Dr. Godwin from Bwera General Hospital, and Kawara Moreen, all residents of the Kasese district. They were taken to Rugazi health center IV before being transferred to other hospitals in the Kasese district.
According to Musitafa Kikisua, the principal secretary for Kasese district, the district has been basing on Bwera general hospital ambulance, he urgently called upon government to for their rescue since the only ambulance in the district is no more.
Authorities urged drivers to exercise caution, especially at night when navigating winding roads to prevent smaller tragedies, adding the investigation into the accident is ongoing.
