A new study by the Ministry of gender and Persons with disabilities reveals that cases of gender based violence against people with disabilities have more than doubled in Kapchorwa, Nakapiripirit, Kotido, and Morot,o but worst of all, with fewer legal servicesÂ
Persons with disabilities account for 13.6 percent of the country's general population according to Uganda Bureau of Statistics census, but the majority continue to face barriers in accessing gender based violence prevention and response services, including attitudinal, communication and information, physical and environmental, economic, among othersÂ
Â
Persons with disabilities under their umbrella body National Union of disabled persons of Uganda, say that although the government has outlined several programs to empower Ugandans, many of them have not benefited due to their vulnerability, as John Chris Nisiima, the programs director, explains
Â
They are calling on the government to provide free legal services for persons with disabilities who are survivors of gender based violence seeking justice in the courts of law.
Â
Â
They made all these calls as the world winds up the International Women's month celebrations.
