Traders from 16 upcountry markets across Kampala gathered in significant numbers for a crucial meeting held at the New Taxi Park. The primary goal of the gathering was to present their pressing challenges to national leaders, particularly focusing on the issues plaguing upcountry markets.
Owino Market Traders Highlight Key Issues
Traders operating in Owino Market, popularly known as St. Balikuddembe Market, were among the first to voice their concerns. However, the meeting was not without tension, as disputes arose between market vendors—especially women traders—and market leadership over the high stall fees imposed by the government.
The Owino traders pointed out several critical issues, including the market's poor drainage system, which becomes particularly problematic during the rainy season. They also raised concerns about traders operating outside the market premises, selling goods on the streets, and called for government intervention to regulate this practice.
Nakasero Traders Raise Alarm Over Fire Outbreak
Traders from Nakasero Market brought attention to the recent fire outbreak at Kasasiro Market, which destroyed a significant portion of the market. They also accused KCCA officials and market masters of exploiting traders through unfair practices.
These grievances were presented to the national leadership of traders, with the meeting attended by representatives from the office of the Minister for Kampala, Hajjat Minsa Kabanda. Although the minister was unable to attend, her team listened to the traders' concerns. The traders, however, expressed their determination to meet with her personally to ensure their issues are addressed.
Criticism Over Minister’s Absence
The traders did not hold back in criticizing the minister for her absence, especially given her previous commitments to support their cause. They noted that her no-show, coupled with the late arrival of some KCCA officials, disrupted the meeting's flow. The traders also conveyed strong messages to the minister, emphasizing their frustrations and the urgent need for action.
Upcountry Traders Join the Conversation
Traders from other upcountry markets, including Masaka, Mbarara, Mubende, Mbale, Jinja, and Gulu, also participated in the meeting. They shared their own challenges, urging the national leadership to take swift action to resolve these issues.
Traders from areas like Wandegaya, Nakawa, and other regions also called on KCCA to enforce the directives issued by the President regarding market operations.
Timber Market Traders Seek Resolution
Those operating in timber markets, such as Ndeeba, Wakiseka, and Kasubi, appealed to the leadership of the Federation of Uganda Traders Associations (FUTA) to help resolve internal conflicts and ensure better organization within their sectors.
The meeting served as a vital platform for traders to voice their concerns and seek solutions from national leaders. With issues ranging from poor infrastructure to exploitation and regulatory challenges, the traders are hopeful that their collective voice will lead to meaningful changes in their operations.
