The Minister of Works and transport, Fred Byamukama, has given Energo Project, the company working on the Mityana–Mubende road, an ultimatum of just 8 months to complete the road.
Failure to adhere with this their contract will be terminated and the company blacklisted.
Work on a 86km road started in 2021 initially scheduled for completion in 2024 but only 32km are done.
The contractor seeks for more time to fully handover the project in 2028 which is unacceptable according to Byamukama.
During inspection of the project he directed for the suspension of two engineers in the military pending investigations for alleged inflating of the costs soliciting bribes from Energo Project managers causing a delay.
Kasanda District Chairperson, Drake Semuyaba, says the delayed work hinders movement of goods from a region dominated by farmers.
The directive means work must be completed between February and March 2027 as the government has already paid shillings 195 billion out of the 395 billion budgeted for the road construction.
