Mbale
In a bid to restore order and improve pedestrian movement, Mbale City Council, in collaboration with the police, launched a major operation today targeting street vendors and shop owners who have encroached on walkways.
The operation, which commenced at 7 am, is set to continue throughout the week. Key areas affected include Market Street, Naboa Road, Republic Street, Kumi Road, and Cathedral Avenue.
While some shop owners expressed dissatisfaction, arguing that they face unfair competition from tax-evading street vendors, others welcomed the move, acknowledging the need for a cleaner and more organized city.
Mr. James Kutosi, the Mbale City Council spokesperson, highlighted the importance of the operation, stating, "Our goal is to clear the city's disorganized streets and ensure smooth movement for pedestrians. This is part of our broader plan to enhance the city's infrastructure and aesthetics."
Although some stakeholders raised concerns about insufficient notice prior to the operation, many residents and business owners have voiced their support, praising the initiative as a step toward a more orderly and vibrant city.
The operation underscores Mbale City Council's commitment to addressing urban challenges and improving the quality of life for its residents.END.
