Students affected by the oil exploration activities in the Albertine Graben region have been awarded scholarships as part of efforts to support their education and future prospects.
Last evening, Total EP Uganda, the company responsible for oil exploration in the area, awarded scholarships to parents and guardians of students who completed their Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE). The scholarships cover school fees and other educational expenses, ensuring the children can continue their studies.
One of the beneficiaries, Consolate Onyera, a 17-year-old orphan whose parents passed away, shared her story. Consolate, who hails from Bulisa District, expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to continue her education despite the challenges she has faced.
Chris Ocowunyi, the spokesperson for Total EP Uganda, explained the rationale behind the scholarship program. He emphasized the company's commitment to supporting communities affected by oil exploration activities and ensuring that children in the region have access to quality education.
Norman Lukumu, the LCV Chairperson of Bulisa District, praised the initiative, describing it as a significant step toward empowering vulnerable children in the region.
A total of 103 students benefited from the scholarship program, with most transitioning to Senior One. The beneficiaries come from two districts, Nyoya and Bulisa, which are directly impacted by the oil exploration activities.
