The government has announced that local contractors will be prioritized in the construction of various roads in Kampala, with a commitment to support and empower Ugandan firms. This was revealed by State Minister for Kampala, Joseph Kyofatogabye, during a press conference held at the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) headquarters, where contracts for various road construction projects were signed.
The projects, worth UGX 176 billion, are part of the government's efforts to improve infrastructure in Kampala. Minister Kyofatogabye emphasized that this initiative aims to empower Ugandan contractors who understand the unique challenges of Kampala's road network.
During the event, Minister Kyofatogabye stated, "This time, we are happy that the majority of the contracts have been awarded to Ugandans. These contractors understand the terrain and challenges of Kampala's roads, and we are committed to supporting them to deliver quality work."
The ceremony was attended by KCCA Executive Director Dorothy Kisaka, Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, and representatives from various contracting firms. Contracts were signed for the construction of roads totaling 9 kilometers, funded by the World Bank. Some of the firms awarded contracts include Ben Kiwanuka, Naser, RD Ntake, and Nyongeza.
Of the UGX 176 billion, UGX 13 billion has been allocated for project supervision to ensure quality and timely completion. The government has also urged Ugandan contractors to remain transparent and avoid any form of corruption, emphasizing that the focus is on delivering high-quality infrastructure.
The projects are expected to be completed within 18 months, and contractors have been advised to use durable materials, particularly concrete, to ensure the longevity of the roads.
Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago also spoke at the event, expressing his support for the projects and calling for collaboration among all stakeholders to ensure their success. He emphasized the importance of these roads in improving transportation and boosting economic activities in the city.
This initiative marks a significant step in the government's efforts to promote local capacity and ensure that Ugandan firms play a central role in the country's development projects.
